Working memory plays a very important role, not only in simultaneous interpreting, but also in consecutive interpreting, which is a complex task involving comprehending and note-taking at the same time. In this paper, based on Cowan's(1999) and Mizuno's(2005) theories of working memory, I attempted to find out factors interfering with working memory, causing the degradation of the efficiency and the quality of consecutive interpreting. Then I suggested how to overcome the problems with working memory arising from note-taking, which is essential for consecutive interpretation. I showed why it is important to reduce time lag, discussing the nature of working memory and suggested how to reduce the burden of working memory, showing a way of taking notes more efficiently. I also discussed why it is important to have a good background knowledge about the topics of speech, considering the characteristics of working memory from the cognitive psychological perspective.
