The number of Korean universities running departments of or offering courses on interpretation/translation has significantly increased in recent years. Such a phenomenon has been particularly fueled by the recent strong zeal for English education. At Hankuk Univ. of Foreign Studies (HUFS), for example, 60 students enroll each year to study interpretation/translation at the undergraduate level. Nonetheless, the current curriculum is heavily focused on practice. However, such an imbalance has proven to be not only ineffective but also undesirable from an educational standpoint. Thus, at HUFS, we have opened a course on translation theory, an area that is very unfamiliar to students. And the present study offers a description of how this course has been conducted, what it has achieved, and what could be done for improvement in the future.
