이 논문은 최근 급증하고 있는 북한이주민들이 통일문제에 대해 어떤 의식구조를 갖고 있는지 설문조사를 통해 규명하고 있다. 북한이주민은 남북한간 문화가 교차하였을 때 발생할 수 있는 다양한 갈등과 혼란에 관한 단서를 제공하는 중요한 의의를 가진다. 특히 북한이주민들은 남한 사회 적응을 통해 통일 이후 남북한 사회통합과정에서 나타나게 될 여러 문제점을 예견해 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 현실적으로 이들이 갖고 있는 통일문제에 대한 의식구조는 북한 주민들이 갖고 있는 의식구조를 간접적으로 읽어낼 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 이들이 남한 사회에 적응하면서 가지고 있는 통일문제에 대한 의식구조라는 점에서 각별한 의의와 시사점을 가지고 있다. 특히 여기에서는 이들의 사회배경 요인 및 지역사회 적응력이 통일문제에 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지를 분석하고 있다.
