본 연구는 제 19대 총선에서 발생한 통합진보당 이정희 대표의 여론조사 조작 파문을 통해 우리나라 정치인들의 위기상황 극복을 위한 이미지 회복 전략의 전반적 특징을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 베노이트(Benoit)의 이미지 회복 전략 분석틀을 이용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 보수를 대표하는 2개의 일간지인 조선일보, 동아일보와 진보를 대변하는 경향신문과 한겨레신문을 살펴보았는데 이정희 대표의 여론조작 사건 보도에서 구사한 이미지 회복 전략 중 가장 높은 비중을 차지한 전략이 ‘개선행위(corrective action)’와 ‘사과(mortification)’ 항목이었다. 다음으로 높은 수치의 항목은 ‘입지강화(bolstering)’, ‘초월(transcendence)’, ‘단순부정(simple denial)’, ‘최소화(minimization)’ 등 이었고 그 다음은 ‘책임전가(shifting the blame)’, ‘희생양 만들기(provocation)’, ‘차별화(differentiation)’, ‘공격자 공격(attack accuser)’, ‘보상(compensation)’, ‘능력부족(defeasibility)’으로 집계 되었다. 결과적으로 베노이트(Benoit)의 5가지 전략 범주 중에서 ‘이정희 대표 여론조사 조작 사건’은 ‘부인(denial)’과 ‘책임회피(evading of responsibility)’, ‘사건의 충격 최소화(reducing of offensiveness of event)’와 같은 책임성 낮은 방어적 전략보다는 ‘개선행위(corrective action)’나 ‘사과(mortification)’ 등의 책임성 높은 수용적 전략을 주로 활용하였으나 위기상황이 심화 될수록 정치인들이 위기상황에서 일반적으로 활용하는 책임성 낮은 전략을 사용하는 빈도가 높아짐으로써 이미지 회복전략에 실패하는 모습을 보이고 있다.
This study examined how Korean political leaders can recover their fallen public image through the case study of representative Lee Jeong Hee of Unified Progressive Party. Lee manipulated the public survey results during the 19th General Election and this study looked at general characteristics of how Korean politicians dealt with crisis. For this purpose, the image recovery strategy analysis framework of Benoit was used. The major findings of this study is as follows; The Chosun Ilbo and Donga Daily, two of the major dailies representing conservative ideology and two of the most widely read progressive newspapers, the Kyunghyang Shinmun and Hankyoreh Shinmun were examined. The most important image recovery strategy that Lee employed was 'corrective action’ and 'mortification.’ The second most important were 'bolstering,' transcendence,', 'simple denial,' and 'minimization,' etc. Next 'shifting the blame', 'scapegoating', 'differentiation', 'attacking accuser', 'compensation', 'defeasibility' were found to be of importance in this order. As the result, of the five strategy categories of Benoit the event of 'Representative Lee's manipulation of the public survey results' used much more responsible responses such as 'corrective action' or 'mortification' rather than passive methods such as 'denial' and 'evading of responsibility.' Rather than resorting to low responsibility measures such as 'reducing of offensiveness of event.' As the crisis worsens, the politicians tend to employ low responsibility strategies more often and this may result in the failure of image recovery.
