본 연구는 동아시아에서는 다양한 지역협력체가 제안되고 생성되었으며, 서로 다른 발전의 경로를 따라 진화하다는 점에 주목한다. 동아시아의 지역통합은 유럽과 비교하여 정체되어 있는 것이 아니라 유럽과는 다른 것이라는 점에서 유럽의 지역주의와는 다른 차원에서 분석될 필요가 있음을 주장한다. 특히 미국의 국가이익에 기반한 동아시아 전략에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 동아시아 지역협력을 유형화한다. 그리고 동아시아에서 나타나고 있는 다양한 지역협력체 사례를 통해 미국과 동아시아 국가들간 상호작용의 역학 속에서 동아시아 지역협력의 진화와 정체라는 역동적인 과정을 이해하고자 했다.
This study aims to understand the evolution behind the efforts for regional integration in East Asia. Regional integration in East Asia is different from the European experience, rather than less institutionalized and stagnant. In this vein, this article seeks to classify the efforts of the regional cooperation in East Asia according to the strategies and national interests of the United States: active institutionalization, stagnation, cutoff and neglected institutionalization. Development of the regional integration in East Asia can be understood through the dynamic process of the interaction between the United States and East Asian countries.
