본 연구는 퇴계 출사관의 양면성을 고찰함에 목적이 있다. 논자는 지난 수년 동안 『퇴계전서』를 읽어 오던 중, 특히 「편지글」(書)속에서 퇴계가 어떤 사람에게는 과거시험에 응시할 것을 적극 권장하거나 과거시험 합격과 제자들의 관직진출을 축하하면서도, 어떤 사람에게는 과거시험 공부를 적극적으로 만류하거나 출사를 비판하고 탈세속성을 칭송한 경우가 적지 않게 나타나고 있음을 발견하였다. 논자는 이에 대해 의구심을 갖고 퇴계의 이런 양면성이 어디에서 나왔는가에 대해 논구하였다. 퇴계가 아들, 손자 및 제자들의 등과(登科)에 깊은 관심을 가진 것은 “우리나라의 풍속이 초야에 이름없는 사람은 가끔 자기 몸 하나도 부지할 수 없는 우려가 있기 때문”이었다. 퇴계자신이 과거에 응시한 이유가 ‘가계빈한’과 ‘부모연로’로 인한 생계유지의 차원이었다는 점에 비추어 볼 때 제자들의 경우에도 거기서 벗어나지 못했다. 아울러 그는 경제적으로 궁핍하고 부모가 연로한 경우에는 과거공부와 학문추구의 동시추구를 반대하지 않았다. 그러나 경제사정이 넉넉하다고 해서 학문만을 닦을 것을 강조하고 있지는 않았다. 퇴계의 과거시험과 출사에 관한 편지글을 전반적으로 검토할 때, 그는 혈족 및 제자들의 출사와 관직 진출을 위한 과거시험 공부를 적극 독려했고, 학문만을 강조한 경우는 많지 않았다. 이는 ‘위기지학’이 굳건해진 후에 벼슬한다는 것 즉, ‘수신이후에 치국이 가능하다’는 유가의 전통적 출사관을 충실히 따른 것이라 할 수 있다. 퇴계의 출사관을 한마디로 요약한다면 ‘벼슬을 하고도 남은 힘이 있으면 배우고, 배우고도 남은 힘이 있으면 벼슬한다.’(仕而優則學, 學而優則仕)는 유가의 전통적 출사관을 전적으로 따르고 있다.
This research is designed to study the dual tendency of the viewpoint of entering government service of Toegye. I have read the "Toegye Testament"(『退溪全書』) over the past few years. Toegye had recommended that some people have to study the state examination, and some people were opposed to enter government office or to devote himself to the study in his letters of the Toegye Testament. I had doubts about this issue, and studied where this dual tendency came. The reason that he is concerned with the passing the higher civil service examination of his son, grandson and disciples was because of "Chosun customs showed us the ordinary people being difficult to live". If his students are poor or their parents are old, he did not object to simultaneously pursue to study civil service examination and to devote to learning. When considering the letters of Toegye by and large, he strongly encouraged for studying the state examination to enter the government office of blood relatives and disciples, but there were not many letters he only emphasized the study. He has faithfully followed the confucian tradition which entering the government office after completing the study of self-discipline, that is, it is possible to rule a country after moral training. If we sum it up in one word, the viewpoint of entering government service of Toegye is follows the confucian traditional outlook on entering government office that "The officer, having discharged all his duties, should devote his leisure to learning. The student, having completed his learning, should apply himself to be an officer."(仕而優則學, 學而優則仕)
