1980년 5·18 민중항쟁이 일어난 지도 어언 35년을 바라보는 오늘 이 시점, 필자를 비롯하여 이 땅의 많은 사람들이 그 때 한국민주주의의 제단에 목숨을 바친 민주투사들에 대해근원적인 부채감을 안고 살아간다. 이에 필자는 이 글을 통해 20세기의 가장 독창적인 정치철학자 중 한사람인 한나 아렌트의 정치이론적 관점에서 5·18의 정치철학적 측면들에 관해함께 성찰해 볼 특별한 계기를 마련하고자 했다. 논문에서 필자의 주장은 다음 세 가지다. 첫째, 최정운의 독창적인 개념 범주로서 “절대공동체”는, 비록 저자 자신은 그 가능성을 부인하는 듯하지만, 다른 서구 정치철학적 어휘로도 적절히 설명될 수 있으며, 특히 한나 아렌트의정치철학과 정치이론은 보다 새롭고 풍요로운 담론의 장을 열 수 있는 가능성을 담보한다. 둘째, 결국 1980년 5월 광주는 우리 한국인의 잠재의식 속에 하나의 섬광처럼 찾아드는 심미적인 초월의 가능성으로서의 정치적 모멘트, 즉 “아렌트적 모멘트”가 도래한 현장이었다고 볼수 있다. 끝으로, 우리가 서양의 이론을 통해 5·18 절대공동체를 설명하는 일은 분명 그 정신을 세계민주주의운동사와 인류문명사에 접맥시킴으로써 이 땅의 민주주의를 위해 목숨을바친 광주시민들의 고귀한 희생의 의미를 더욱 더 잘 기리는 일이 될 것이다.
Today, it has been almost 35 years since the 5·18 Democratic Uprising tookplace in 1980 and many of the countrymen including myself still live feelingfundamentally indebted to those democracy defenders who selflessly sacrificedtheir lives onto the altar of the Korea’s democracy. In this regard, I propose totake this rare occasion to reflect upon the politico-philosophical aspects of the5·18 incident from the theoretical standpoint of Hannah Arendt, one of the mostoriginal political philosophers in the 20th century. My main arguments in thispaper are as follows: firstly, the “absolute community,” which is Prof. Choi JeongWun’s intuitive concept category, can be adequately explained by the vocabularyof Western political philosophy and/or theory regardless of his denial of such apossibility. In my view, the political philosophy and theory of Hannah Arendtappears to posit a fresh possibility of opening up a newer and richer discourse ofthe 5·18 Democratic Uprising; secondly, in retrospect, the May 1980 Gwangjucould be considered as the very spot where the political moment or “the Arendtianmoment” or a fleeting possibility of aesthetic transcendence has come to realizationin our subconsciousness; and, lastly, explaining the 5·18 absolute community interms of some Western political theory may help render its spirit incorporatedinto the entire world history of democratic movement as well as the history ofhumankind. In so doing, however, we can undoubtedly pay a meaningful tributeto the noble sacrifices of Gwangju citizens in the cause of our country’s democracy.
