스피노자 심신론에 대한 해석은 이중측면론과 심신평행론이 양분하고 있다. 그런데 스피노자를 공부하는 초기에 한 쪽의 해석을 먼저 접하게 되면, 우리는 그의 이론을 단순히 평행론 또는 이중측면론으로 (잘못) 간주하게 되고, 그 선입관에서 벗어나기가 쉽지 않다. 더구나 이중측면론과 평행론이 서로 무관심한 채 일방통행만을 고집하고 있기 때문에 우리는 일원론과 이원론이라는 전혀 다른 두 개의 해석을 놓고 고민할 수밖에 없다. 사실상 이중측면론과 평행론은 나름대로 명백한 원문상의 증거를 가지고 있기 때문에 둘 중 어느 하나만을 스피노자의 이론으로 채택하는 것은 무리가 있다. 그렇다면 우리는 스피노자가 상반되는 두 이론을 동시에 주장하는 자가 당착에 빠졌다고 결론 내려야 할지도 모른다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 하나의 가능한 시도를 해 보았다. 본 논문은 두 개의 해석을 비교, 분석, 고찰함으로써 스피노자 심신론에 대한 잘못된 선입관을 가지지 않게 하거나 벗어나게 하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 또한 일원론과 이원론인 이중측면론과 평행론이 사실상 서로 친밀하게 연관되어 있는 이론이라는 점을 밝힘으로써 두 해석을 대립 관계가 아닌 상호보완 관계에서 설명하고 있다. 이러한 작업을 통해 본 논문이 일원론과 이원론이라는 전혀 다른 두 개의 해석인 이중측면론과 평행론 사이에서 고민하는 사람들에게 도움을 줄 수 있기를 기대한다.
The interpretation of Spinoza’s mind-body theory is divided by two parts which are the double aspect theory and psychophysical parallelism. However, at the beginning of studying Spinoza, if we only approach to the one side only, we are likely to wrongly presume that his theory is nothing more than parallelism or the double aspect theory, and thus it is hard to get rid of our preconception. Moreover, since the double aspect theory and parallelism only insist the one-way by neglecting each other, we are forced to be in agony considering completely different interpretations of monism and dualism. In fact, both the double aspect theory and parallelism have their clear and original evidences, and thus it would be a difficult selection if we are given only one choice. Then perhaps, we probably have to conclude that Spinoza had fallen into self-contraction who insists two of the controversial theories. Here, in this paper, in order to solve such a problem, a new possible method was attempted. The main purpose of this paper is, by comparing, analyzing and considering two interpretations, to prevent anyone falling into preconception of Spinoza’s mind-body theory or to release from it. Furthermore, by clarifying that the double aspect theory and parallelism are, in fact, closely related theories, we can explain that these two interpretations are not opposed to each other but are in a mutually supporting relation. Throughout this work, I hope that this paper would help those people who are in trouble owing to the two completely different interpretations of the double aspect theory and parallelism which are monism and dualism.
