간디가 말하는 종교는 우주 내에 존재하는 질서 잡힌 도덕적 지배에 대한 신념이었다. 이런 의미에서 종교와 도덕은 하나이다. 간디는 종교의 본질을 도덕률과 진리, 아힘사의 원리에 두었다. 간디에 의하면 진리 외에 다른 신은 없다. 신은 모든 이성적 정의를 초월하며, 형상이나 특성이 없다. 신은 여러 이름으로 나타날 수 있지만 진리는 하나이고 가장 확실한 것이기 때문에 진리가 곧 신이다.진리의 실현이 아힘사의 실천이다. 아힘사를 실천하기 위해서는 자기 정화가 선행되어야 하며, 이를 통해 해탈에 이를 수 있다. 해탈은 도덕적 영적 지식의 결합이다. 간디는 인도의 독립과 힌두교와 이슬람교의 갈등의 해결, 그리고 불가촉천민 제도라는 사회적 패악을 없애기 위해 아힘사를 실천했다. 즉 아힘사를 종교적 신앙으로 승화하여 그것을 사회개혁의 수단으로 사용한 것이다.간디는 관용과 화해의 정신으로 종교 간의 갈등을 해소하기를 원했다. 간디가 종교적 관용과 화해의 원리로서 제시한 것은 진리와 아힘사이다. 모든 종교는 하나의 본질적인 진리에 근거해 있다는 것과 모든 종교는 아힘사를 근본 원리로 하고 있다는 것이다.


For Gandhi, the religion is a faith about moral control which exist in the universe and has strict order. On this focus, religion and morality are the same. Like this, Gandhi believes that the essence of religion is rule of morality, truth and principle of ahiṃsā. For Gandhi, there is no god but truth. god has no shape, no character. But god overcome all rational right. So god can be called as many name but truth is one. And the most certain thing is truth. So the truth is god. A realization of truth is a practice of ahiṃsā. To practice ahiṃsā, self-purification should be done first. And you can reach mokṣa by this. The mokṣa is union of moral knowledge. To achieve independent of india, to solve the trouble between hindu and moslem, and to abolish the social vice - untouchables, Gandhi do ahiṃsā. That is Gandhi sublimate ahiṃsā into religious faith and use it as way of social reform. Gandhi want to solve religious trouble by the spirit of tolerance and reconciliation. Gandhi give truth and ahiṃsā to people as principles of the spirit of tolerance and reconciliation. It means that every religion based on fundamental truth and every religion has ahiṃsā as basic principles.
