심리학에서 정서는 정서의 기반, 정서의 요소, 정서의 표현이라는 측면에서 ‘신경생리학적 기반 위에서 인지와 느낌을 요소로 표현하고, 동기를 불러일으키고, 적응하는 것’으로 정의할 수 있다. 기본정서를 기준으로 심리학의 정서를 분류할 때 기본정서는 보편성을 가지고, 문화적 관여가 최소한이고, 제한된 인지과정만 개입하고, 신경학적 근거와 생리학적 기제를 가지고, 개체발생 초기에 발현되고, 진화적으로 오래되고, 진화적 가치가 있고, 특징적인 표현양태와 전형적인 반응을 가지고, 적응과 부적응의 기능을 한다. 이러한 기본정서로는 분노, 공포, 슬픔, 기쁨이 있다. 아비담마에서 정서는 동기, 인지와 밀접히 연관되어 있다. 이는 인지, 정서, 동기가 14가지 마음작용을 공통적으로 가진다는 것에서도 알 수 있다. 그리고 이들은 자아와 연관되어 있다. 아비담마의 부정적 정서는 ‘성냄을 원인으로 하는 마음’의 영역에서 볼 수 있다. 이는 ‘자극의 유무와 함께 불만족과 적의가 결합된 마음’으로 정의할 수 있다. 부정적 정서의 종류에는 8가지가 있다. 17가지 마음작용과 결합하는 성냄, 질투, 인색, 후회의 마음 4가지와 19가지 마음작용과 결합하는 성냄, 질투, 인색, 후회의 마음 4가지이다. ‘성냄을 원인으로 하는 마음’에서 보는 아비담마의 정서의 특징을 보면, 부정적인 정서와 유익한 정서의 구분은 불교의 궁극목표에 도움이 되는지 여부에 달려있다. 그리고 정서는 연속적이면서 다양한 층이 있고, 대상에 따라서 정서가 바뀌고, 대상과의 관계는 자아와 연관되어 있다. 부정적인 정서는 밀쳐내는 에너지와 연관되어 있다. 심리학에 비해서 정서의 부정적인 기능이 강조되고 있다. 그리고 아비담마의 부정적 정서에는 이차정서의 중요성이 부각된다.
Emotion in psychology is defined as function of communication and adaptation, which is based on neurological and physiological mechanism and includes affect, cognition and motivation. Basic emotions have universality which minimalizes the cultural and cognitive effects, have function of adaption with archetypal expression, have evolutionary value, are revealed in early ontogenetic development, based on neurological and physiological mechanism. while definition of emotion emphasizes affect, cognition and motivation, definition of basic emotions emphasize universality, ontogenetic development and evolutionary effect. Emphasis on corelation of affect, cognition and motivation is also characteristic of mental factors in abhidhamma. Ultimate goal in buddhism classifies mental factors as the beneficial and the baneful, mental factor combines with other mental factors, and also contains affective, cognitive and motivational factors. Mind decides which cetasika would be combined with. Hatred, Envy, Avarice and Worry work the baneful effect to the goal of Buddhism. They take on multiaspect from subtle to coarse workings of mental factors and typical characteristics. They have feature of mental factors general, feature of Hatred and peculiarity itself. And they interact with mind having displeasure, aversion and stimuli. They are basic emotions in which have their own peculiarity, also second emotions in which are the baneful to ultimate goal.
