미국 환경주의에 대한 분석을 목적으로 하는 이 논문은 환경에 대한 이념적 지형과 집합행동이라는 측면에서 미국 환경운동의 역사를 크게 세 시기로 분류하고- 개척기, 보존기, 생태기 등, 각 시기마다의 주요 특징들을 다음과 같은 구성요소를 중심으로 보다 세분화하여 논의하고 있다: 환경에 대한 초점, 이미지, 이념 혹은 사상, 그리고 보다 구체적인 집합행동의 사례 등. 나아가 이 논문은 복잡 다양한 한국사회의 환경담론 및 환경운동의 양상에 대한 보다 선명한 이해를 위해서, 한국의 환경주의가 포괄하고 있는 여러 구성요소들을 중심으로 분석해 볼 필요성이 있음을 제안하고 있다.
Appreciating the full potential of the Korean environmental movement as a social movement depends on a closer understanding of its present status in comparison to that of other countries’ environmental movements. To that end, this paper examines American environmentalism, which has a wealth of data, issues, activities and motivations. Focusing on framing ideology and collective actions, this history of American environmentalism looks at three periods: the Frontier period, the Conservation period, and the Ecological period. The discussion shows that American environmentalism can be broken down into its component parts, in terms of focus, image of nature, ideology, and collective action. The concluding discussion suggests a similar approach for the study of Korean environmentalism.
