최근 ‘생태계 건강’이라는 말은 환경의 질을 논의하는데 자주 사용되고 있고 또한 환경보호의 목표로서 이용된다. 그래서 여기에서는 먼저 그러한 용어를 정의하려는 시도들을 살펴본다. 그런데 이렇게 ‘생태계 건강’이라는 말을 사용하고자 하는 것은 과학에 근거해서 우리의 환경 목표들을 객관화하려는 하나의 시도이다. 왜냐하면 과학적인 정의들은 보통 비과학적인 정의들보다 더 객관적인 것으로 얘기되기 때문이다. 그러나 이러한 구분은 잘못되었을 뿐만 아니라 별로 도움이 될 것도 없다. 환경 목표들의 토대를 과학에 두려는 시도는 점점 여러 가지 문제를 드러낸다. 생태계 건강은 가치 적재적인 개념이다. 그리고 생태계 건강에 대한 정의는 이해관계 제어적이다. 생태계를 평가하거나 정의하는 과학자들조차도 각각 자신들의 특정한 이해관계나 의견에 의존하는 상이한 변수들을 선택할 것이다. 그러므로 우리는 생태학적 건강이나 온전성을 단순히 생태학적 본래성에 의해, 다시 말해 자연적인 역사를 문화적인 역사로부터 떼어놓고 정의할 수는 없다. 그렇기 때문에 우리는 문화나 자연의 사용과 조화를 이루는, 하지만 도구적 가치가 최대화되지 않는 방향으로 생태계 건강개념을 발전시켜야 한다. 그래서 결론적으로는 그러한 개념을 적절하게 정의내리고 환경보호의 목표로서 이용하기 위해서 우리는 우리의 이해관계뿐만 아니라 우리의 가치들이나 이상들도 복합적으로 그러나 적절히 반영해야 한다는 것을 강조한다.
In recent years the term 'ecosystem health' has often been used in discussions of environmental quality and also as a goal of environmental protection. So in the beginning I examine the attempts to define this term. However the turn towards ecosystem health is another attempt to objectify our environmental goals on the basis of science. This is because scientific definitions are usually taken to be more objective than non-scientific definitions. But this conception is misleading and unproductive. Attempts to define environmental goals on the basis of science have become increasingly problematic. In the first place, 'ecosystem health' is a value-laden term. In the second place, such definitions are interest-driven. Even scientists' evaluations and definitions of ecosystem will reflect their own specific interests and expertises. Hence we cannot usefully define ecological health or integrity simply in terms of ecological authenticity―that is, from the perspective of natural history independently of cultural history. Therefore we must develop a conception of ecosystem health which is compatible with culture and nature, and also in a way that does not maximize instrumental value. Finally, I insist that we must appropriately incorporate our values and ideals as well as our interests in our definition of ecosystem health and use it as our goal of environmental protection.
