Energy Security underpins every aspect of National Security, with the ready availability of affordable oil powering the expansion of western economies and individual standard of living for most of the last century. However, this finite resource cannot endlessly satisfy our ever increasing appetite for energy - a moment of Peak Oil will occur when demand outstrips supply - and one of the key supporting pillars of National Security have to be reconsidered. Exploring the relationship between Oil, Energy Security and National Security, this paper finds the idea of Peak Oil is broadly accepted, but the consequences remain contested. In the final part, the analysis of Energy and National Security developed earlier in the paper is used to make an independent assessment of the impact of Peak Oil on National Security.
