梅泉 黃玹은 문학사에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 위대한 시인이다. 이는 주로 매천의 현실주의적 경향의 작품들로 받은 평가이다. 매천이 살았던 시대와 그의 생애에서 현실에 대한 치열한 인식과 그를 토대로 한 성과물을 제외하고는 매천의 삶과 문학을 논의하기 어렵기 때문이다. 물론 정당하지만 이로 인해 그가 남긴 서경 내지는 서정시에 해당하는 작품들이 제대로 평가받지 못하였다. 본고는 매천이 남긴 산수시에 대해 주목하였다. 특히 그가 일생의 대부분을 살았던 구례와 섬진강의 산수 자연을 소재로 지어진 작품을 그 대상으로 한다. 매천의 산수시를 살핀 결과 그는 매우 따스한 시선으로 남도와 구례 지역의 산수자연을 형상하였음을 확인하였다. 이는 곧 매천 자신이 살아가는 현장으로서의 산수자연에 대한 자부심의 발로이다. 그리고 이는 우리국토 전체로 확장될 수 있다. 또한 매천은 우리의 산수자연을 삶의 터전으로 이해하였다. 아름다운 산수자연 속에서 아름다운 삶을 영위해가는 민족의 모습을 그렸던 것이다. 따라서 매천의 산수시는 단순히 현실도피처 내지는 은거지로서의 산수를 그린 것에서 그치는 것이 아니고 민족의 삶의 현장으로서의 산수를 노래했고, 이점이 바로 그의 우국시에 드러나는 애국적 자세와 같은 맥락으로 이어지게 된다.

This paper focuses on the nature poem that Maecheon leaved, especially about Gurye and Sumjin river's scenery that he shared his life. Maecheon described the landscape of Honam and Gurye with warm heart by his poem. This is the expression of his pride of the place that he lived and his nation. Also, Maecheon thought nature is home of our life. He expressed the people with beautiful life in beautiful nature. So Maecheon's nature poem images nature not only the hideout of people, but also the place of livelihood. This point is connected to the patriotism of his poem.
