The studies of prose works are very insignificant in comparison with the traditional prestige of prose part in Chinese classical literatures. As the result, in case of Su Dongpo (蘇東坡, 1036-1102) who is well known for his excellent prose works until now, the general and systematical studies about his proses are also small in quantity comparing with the studies of his other literary fields. Therefore, this dissertation tried to find out the characteristics of the content in his proses which can be the most typical case with the purpose of helping the studies on the prose part. This study would particularly seek the effects of his prose writings in the history of Chinese literature by analyzing his lyrical & epic proses in the process of the analysis of the contents as well. On the basis of these ideas the analysis of his argument proses, literary theory and characteristics of forms in those writings will be the subjects for the further studies. Due to his expression way with which proses are oriented toward the contents, so the styles are accessorial, his proses were classified largely such as three parts: arguments, lyrical and epic proses. And this study analyzed the contents of his lyrical & epic proses among the writings which have not been mentioned a lot on the basis of them and reached the conclusion as followings;According to contents the lyrical proses can be classified as 1) view of life with modest and integral attitude, 2) fellowship, 3) the emotions of keeping aloof, 4) sorrowful indignation 5) feelings of sorrow. The epic proses can be classified as 1) the histories of persons 2) the rules and customs 3) the records of castles and pavilions. And Su Dongpos’ lyrical and epic proses are not only various, logical, and vivid but also affectionate in their contents. Also his proses have great, peculiar, natural, plain styles which influenced on Chinese proses depressed for a long time with a new vitality and had great effects on later generations. In short, Su Dongpo should be regarded as a writer who created highly inventive prose works which are rich in content and full of literary value by accepting all over the earlier writers’ merits, harmonizing with his own personality and representing his own original beauties in his works.
