For the past decades, the Taiwan Strait is one of the highly tensioned region in the world. China has intended to contest Taiwan’s politicodiplomatic legitimacy for a long time, Taiwan has significantly been restricted its international options. However, in the recent years, the cross-strait relations have showing new changes at least in the economic and social exchanges. Especially, following the rapid rise of China’s economic power,China already became the second largest export market of, and the largest source of trade surplus for Taiwan, and Taiwan has become the mainland’s fifth largest trading partner and second largest import market. This means the high degree of economic interdependence between Mainland China and Taiwan. At the same time, in the sense of the economic regional integration,East Asia has been centered on China. The development trend of China-led economic integration in the East Asian region, such as China-Hong Kong/Macau CEPA, China-ASEAN FTA, and China-Taiwan ECFA, bring some new influences to the discussion and dynamics to the regional integration issues. This paper investigates the political-economic meanings of improved cross-strait relations that focused on ECFA.
