본 논문은 글로벌 SK그룹(구 선경그룹)을 창업하여 사업보국 정신으로 한국 근대화에 기여한 담연 최종건 창업회장의 생애와 기업가정신을 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다. 선경그룹(현 SK그룹) 창업주 최종건 회장은 창업가형 기업가답게 그의 생애를 불사르며 선경을 창업하여 키웠다. 특히 국내 첫 엔지니어출신으로 글로벌기업을 창업한 기업가라는 특징과 국내 직물업계 최초로 인견직물에 이어 원사를 해외에 수출함으로써 한국 경제발전에 크게 기여하였다. 그리고 굴지의 대기업 집단으로 성장할 수 있는 기반을 닦은 창업가형 기업가이다. 그는 1953년 5월초 한국전쟁으로 잿더미가 된 공장의 폐허에서 직조기 부품들을 모아 네 대의 직조기를 조립한다. 조립되어 가동되는 직조기에서 꿈과 희망의 씨앗을 본 것이다. 그의 꿈은 우리나라 제일의 종합섬유제조업자가 되는 것이었다. 최종건 회장의 꿈은 더 원대 해졌다. 그는 국내 최고의 섬유기업집단으로써 필요한 원자재를 필요한 시기에 직접 통제함으로써 비용과 시간을 절약할 수 있는 수직계열화를 이룬 다는 것이다. 여기서 주목해야하는 또 하나의 사실은 직물생산기업이 원사생산과 정유사업으로 나가는 후방연계(backward linkage)를 확립한 것이다. 특히 1973년 초 선경유화와 선경석유(정유공장)의 설립은 그 꿈을 실현 시키려는 최종건 회장의 ‘석유에서 섬유까지’의 열정과 신념의 기록이다. 무에서 유를 창조해낸 그의 개척자 정신과 강력한 추진력으로 이룬 업적이다. 최종건 회장의 도전과 개척정신의 발로인 것이다. 최종건 회장의 개척자 정신, 열정과 신념, 품질우위 정신, 사업보국의 정신이 있었기에 창업이 가능했고, 인재와 기술 그리고 신용을 중시한 기업가정신이 선경그룹(현 SK그룹)의 도약을 가능하게 했다. 담연 최종건 SK그룹 창업회장은 이러한 경영이념과 기업가정신으로 짧은 생애였지만 SK그룹 100년의 기반을 닦았고 한국경제발전에 큰 족적을 남겼다.
This paper purports to examine the life and the entrepreneurship of Jong Kun Chey who made a great contribution to the modernization of Korea by establishing and running the SK Group as a way of serving the country. Jong Kun Chey was a business man who deserved to be called an entrepreneur. Actually, he was the first engineer who raised up his business to become global and finally materialize into one of the leading conglomerates of South Korea. Also, he added to the economic development of South Korea by expanding textile foreign trade to include yarn besides artificial silk. In early May of 1953, he collected components of loom from the ruins of textile factories after the Korean War, and successfully assembled those parts into 4 units of loom. He saw hope and a new dream when the assembled loom began working. His new dream was to become the largest general textile manufacturer in South Korea. President Chey’s visions became more ambitious afterwards. He intended to cut costs and save time by directly controling the flow of raw materials through vertical integration of the manufacturing processes as the leading general textile company. Another remarkable fact is that he established a backward linkage through which oil refining business was incorporated with the yarn business. Two establishment of 1973, that is, Sunkyung Yuhwa (DMT) and Sunkyung Refinery were a record of President Chey’s long cherished passion and conviction to cover from textile to petroleum. SK Group was a product of President Chey’s pioneership and strong drive to make something great out of nothing. It was a manifestation of his challenging spirit and frontiership. It was President Chey’s frontiership, passion and conviction, spirit of superior quality, patriotic orientation of running businesses that made possible the creation of the SK Group. On the other hand, his recognition of the importance of human resources, technology, and credibility worked as a basis of the SK Group’s far-reaching jump afterwards. President Chey’s values and entrepreneurship, thus, lay a foundation for the SK Group’s 100 years progress and left a big footprints in the economic development of South Korea, though short was his life.
