샤머니즘은 민중종교로서 여전히 많은 한국인들의 종교심성에 기저로 작동한다. 그러한 성격은 샤머니즘으로 하여금 사회가 절실히 필요로 하는 생태환경의 보전이라는 과제를 어떻게 처리할 것인가 하는 중대한 문제에 대하여 한국인들의 생각을 들여다보는 통로의 하나로 기능하게 만든다. 이러한 맥락에 대한 인식을 바탕으로, 본고에서는 샤머니즘이 한국 종교 전통의 하나로서 여러 종교가 공존하는 한국 사회에서 종교간 대화와 협력이라는 측면에서 점점 더 그 중요성이 더해가는 생태환경의 보전을 위하여 가지는 역할과 의미를 천착하려고 한다. 본론에서는 먼저, 생태환경에 대한 샤머니즘 신봉자들의 인식에 대한 자료를 무가를 통하여 살펴봄으로써, 그에 대한 정리와 분석을 한다. 그러고 나서, 샤머니즘 의례들 안에 들어있는 ‘생태환경의 보전’이라는 요소를 찾아내는 작업인 종교현상학적인 해석을 시도한다. 그리하여 여러 종교가 공존하는 오늘의 한국 사회에 샤머니즘의 세계관이 제시하는 생태환경의 보전이라는 의미를 찾아보고 그 실천의 길을 모색한다. 물질 만능의 시대를 지나 영성과 문화의 새로운 세기를 맞이하게 되면서, 사람들은 지난 시절을 되돌아보고 생태계와 더불어 사는 삶을 지향하면서 기쁨과 희망을 준비하고 있다. 대내외적으로 매우 중요한 전환기를 맞이한 이때에, 현대 사회 안에서 생태환경의 보전을 위하여 종교의 역할은 상대적으로 그 중요성을 더하고 있기도 하다. 이러한 시기에 특히 한반도에서 오랜 세월 민중과 함께 해온 종교로서의 역사를 가진 샤머니즘이 지닌 생태환경의 보호자 및 교육자로서의 역할을 천착하는 작업은 매우 필요하다고 여겨진다.
Shamanism, a Korean people's religion, functions as one of the fundamental Korean religiosity as before. Such character of shamanism shows us a way how we can manage the task of environmental protection. On the contextual base of this kind of perception, I will investigate the role and meaning of shamanism as people's religion for the protection of ecological environment. This sort of research is getting more and more important in a dynamic society as Korea where various religious traditions are looking for inter-religious dialogue and cooperation. As the first step in this article, I collect and analyze materials like shamans'songs concerning the environment protector' and educator's role of shamanists. And then I try to interpret the shamanistic ritual materials phenomenologically whether shamanist perception includes the factor of environmental protection. In this way, I grope for some clue of practice which shamanism as one of the oldest religions brings up to protect the environment efficiently in a multi-religious society. After the era of development and exploitation, now we are welcoming the century of spirituality and culture. In this age, people look over the past and prepare joy and hope for a new life. By such an important turning point, the role of religions for the protection of ecological environment becomes more and more important in comparison with any other institutions in modern society. Furthermore, the role of shamanists as protector and educator of ecological environment is especially invaluable for the scientific research.
