최근 텔레비전 드라마나 영화와 같은 대중문화 작품에서 복수를 주제로 한 것이 계속 등장하고 있다. 이에 대해서 대중도 복수의 정당성을 인정하고 수용하는 현상이 있다. 이에 따라 복수란 인간 삶에서 어떤 의미를 갖는 것인지에 대해 궁금증을 갖고 그 해답을 설화에서 얻고자 하였다. 이를 위해 복수 행위가 분명하게 드러나는 설화들을 일차 선별하였다. 가해자와 피해자 관계에 주목했을 때 부부 관계에서 문제가 발생하는 경우가 가장 많았다. 그 다음으로 사회적 관계, 위계에 의한 관계, 계모와 전처 자식의 관계, 사람과 동물의 관계, 남녀 관계 등의 유형이 분류되었다. 복수의 원인이 된 사건은 성, 재물, 명예가 주요인이 되었다. 부부 관계를 기반으로 한 설화가 가장 많은 것은 부부 중심의 가족 관계를 중시하는 가치관이 반영된 결과라고 보았다. 피해자가 직접 복수 주체가 되는 경우가 가장 많은 것은 복수는 감정의 문제이기 때문인 것으로 파악하였다.
