5세기 말 이후 신라 왕경의 인구는 꾸준히 증가하였다. 주변 小國의 지배층 일부가 왕경으로 이주하고, 전국의 財貨들도 왕경에 집중되었다. 인구와 재화의 분산이 필요했다. 신라는 지방에 小京을 설치하기 시작했고, 삼국통일 이후에 5개 소경을 갖추었다. 6세기 초부터 설치된 소경에는 왕경인의 일부가 집단 이주했고, 다른 지방의 주민들이 徙民되는 경우도 있었다. 왕경 중심부의 공간 부족은 지배층 일부의 거주지를 경주 외곽으로 확산시켰다. 일부 귀족들은 소경을 비롯해서 州·郡으로 이주하였다. 필자는 이렇게 지방으로 거주지를 옮긴 왕경 귀족들의 신분 변화가 있었는지, 編籍地까지 지방으로 바뀌었는지를 검토하였다. 신라 귀족들은 왕경을 떠나 小京이나 州・郡 어디서 살든 여전히 왕경인이었다. 거주지를 옮겨 여러 세대가 지나더라도 왕경에 있는 6部 중 하나에 戶籍을 올려두고 있었다. 編籍地를 왕경으로 유지하는 것이 그들의 骨品과 특권을 유지하는 기본 조건이었기 때문이다. 그래서 필자는 신라 왕경에 17萬戶가 살았다는 기록에는 이런 수자가 많이 포함된 것이라고 판단하였다. 이런 양상은 신라의 지배체제를 군현제를 중심으로 한 중앙집권제로만 파악하는 시각만으로는 충분히 이해할 수 없음을 보여주는 것이라 생각한다.
Since the late 5th century, the population of the capital of Silla had continually increased. Some of the ruling class of the neighboring small countries had immigrated to the capital of Silla, which brought the wealth and goods to the capital as well. The government of Silla felt the need to distract the population and the wealth, and started to install the secondary capitals, called Sogyŏng(小京). Total of 5 secondary capitals were installed after the Silla Unification. The ruling class of the capital extended their territories to the outskirts of the capital. Some of the aristocrats emigrated as a group to the secondary capitals, or to the rural districts, such as chu(州) or gun(郡) after the Unification. In this study, I examined if there were changes in the status of the aristocrats who moved to the rural area, and if they had modified the place of their family register as well. My conclusion is that the Silla aristocrats, whether they lived in the Silla capital, secondary capitals, or the rural districts, considered themselves to be the citizens of the Silla capital. Those who migrated from the Silla capital to the other parts of the country put one of the 6 districts of the capital as their place of family register, and even kept it through the generations. They did so because putting the Silla capital as the place of their family register worked as the basic condition for them to keep their bone rank status and the privileges that followed. In my opinion, the large number of the population of Silla capital shown in the record, which was counted up to one hundred and seventy thousand families, includes these migrated numbers who claimed to belong to the Silla capital as well.
